Cologne Cathedral, officially known as the High Cathedral Church of St. Peter and Mary, is not only the symbol of the city of Cologne but also a historic masterpiece of superlatives. A key reason for the monumental new construction in 1248 was the transfer of the relics of the Three Kings by Archbishop Rainald von Dassel in 1164. The magnificent Shrine of the Three Kings, created to house these relics, made the city one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world and called for an architectural setting of unparalleled splendor.
