Sparrenburg Castle is the landmark of Bielefeld and sits enthroned on the 180-meter-high Sparrenberg hill in the Teutoburg Forest. The complex was built between 1240 and 1250 by the Counts of Ravensberg and expanded into a Renaissance fortress in the 16th century. Its characteristic features include the 31.5-meter-high keep and a 250-meter-long underground tunnel system, the casemates. Today, the castle grounds are a popular destination open all year round, with the tower and casemates open to visitors
