COLOR SPACE

Under the title “FARBRAUM,” Wuppertal-based photographer and architect Manuel Heywinkel will present a selection of his color photography at the Galerie im Turm starting Friday, September 4, 2026.

The opening reception begins on September 4 at 7 p.m. The exhibition space is located in the Christuskirche in Elberfeld’s Südstadt district. The exhibition focuses on the question of how color influences the perception of spaces, places, and situations. The photographs depict color not only as a characteristic of a subject but as an independent design element.

Light, surfaces, lines, and contrasts create different moods and give the images their unique impact. The exhibition brings together various photographic genres. On display are architectural photographs and geometrically defined interiors, as well as landscapes, nature scenes, and atmospheric lighting effects. Urban observations, travel scenes, and selected portraits round out the spectrum. At times, color emerges powerfully and vibrantly; at other times, it appears subdued and minimalist.

As a trained architect, Manuel Heywinkel often focuses on spatial relationships, lines, perspectives, and proportions. In “FARBRAUM,” however, the selection of images deliberately goes beyond architectural photography.

The diverse subjects are united by clear composition and a deliberate exploration of light and color. Some works thrive on strong color contrasts and graphic forms. Other images make their impact through subtle transitions, natural color moods, or individual pops of color. The result is a varied exhibition that brings together different facets of color photography.

Manuel Heywinkel is also currently attracting a great deal of attention with his regularly organized photo walks. The photo walk along the Wuppertal Nordbahntrasse, in particular, was very well received and proved to be a great success. The upcoming photo walk in Frankfurt am Main has also generated significant interest: all spots were filled within a few hours.

Photographic Art & Literature

The exhibition in Wuppertal’s Südstadt district (Christuskirche) is not intended merely as a chance to view pictures on a wall, but rather as an interdisciplinary gathering place for art enthusiasts. Visitors can therefore look forward to two very special highlights:

Guest Photographer Andreas Kretzschmar: Manuel Heywinkel brings photographer Andreas Kretzschmar on board for an exciting dialogue. Kretzschmar’s delicate works create a visual echo that perfectly complements the exhibition.

Cultural Event on September 16: On Wednesday evening, Düsseldorf-based author Sebastian Brück (known as @duessel_flaneur) will be a guest at the gallery. In keeping with the exhibition’s aesthetic, he will read from his new novel "Der Über-Dandy" starting at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone who has the opportunity to visit the Bergisches Land in September should definitely not miss this visual experience.
