Im Fluss der Zeit - Der Kaiserwagen

In the Flow of Time- The "Kaiserwagen"

Dirk Eichler

A cloudless sky, the gentle reflections on the Wupper River, and a solitary red tower soaring majestically above the valley: On Pentecost Sunday, our team struck gold at the historic Werther Bridge station.

The timing for this snapshot couldn’t have been better, as the image perfectly captures the interplay of bold engineering and urban romance. At the center of the image is a floating legend: the historic imperial car (car no. 5) of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway.

A Living Legend Since 1900

This historic railcar from 1900, which has been largely preserved in its original condition, is a true technical monument. The vehicle owes its historic name to a very special event: On October 24, 1900, Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Auguste Viktoria undertook a historic test run with the train from Elberfeld to Vohwinkel.

Anyone who sees the Imperial Car in Wuppertal today is looking at a perfectly restored, two-car train set: The train: The iconic train consists of the main car (Car 5 with driver’s cab) and the matching trailer car (Car 22). The luxurious interior: The interior of the train is dominated by stately, historic details. Original red plush upholstery on the seats, golden embellishments, and fine wood paneling bring the imperial splendor of the turn of the century back to life.

Exclusive Use

Understandably, this historic railcar is no longer used for regular scheduled service, but is reserved exclusively for special tourist trips and events.

The Werther Bridge

The Werther Bridge station in Barmen is considered by architecture and photography enthusiasts to be one of the most beautiful stops along the entire route. Built in 1903 in a delicate Art Nouveau style, the green steel framework provides the perfect color contrast to the deep dark red of the Imperial Car.

For our latest photo motif, we sought out precisely this point of tension: The hard, geometric symmetry of the truss structure cuts diagonally across the image, while the organic green of the riverside trees and the flowing waters of the Wupper lend the image a soothing, timeless depth.
